Develop new sustainable and competitive bio-based value chains in Europe
Since 2014, the BBI JU initiative (public/private partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium) supports European projects tackling the technological and innovation challenges to shift towards a European bioeconomy.
As for the fifth previous calls, the 2019 Annual Work Plan will promote the development of new sustainable and competitive bio-based value chains from various feedstocks and through efficient processing to produce new bio-based products. The market uptake of these new bio-based products and their respective applications will also be a 2019 priority.
These 4 strategic orientations (feedstock, process, product and market uptake) remain the scientific priorities of the 2019 Annual Work Plan recently published on the BBI JU website .
21 topics and a deadline for proposal submission on September 4th 2019
With an indicative budget of 135 M€ and 21 topics, the BBI JU will once again support the innovative projects that will contribute to reduce the fossil-based dependence of the European industrial landscape.
The deadline for proposal submission is September 4th 2019 and the topics per strategic orientations are divided as follow:
Foster supply of sustainable biomass feedstock to feed both existing and new value chains
The two main objectives are to either improve the utilisation of existing feedstock sources or to expand the exploitation of under-utilised or new feedstocks. The biomass feedstocks considered include agri-based, aquatic/marine and bio-waste and CO2 feedstocks.

Optimise efficient processing for integrated biorefineries through research, development and innovation
The objective is to develop new and efficient processing such as feedstock pre-treatment and its conversion to bio-based chemicals and materials, downstream processing for separation and purification and system modelling.

Develop innovative bio-based products for identified market applications
This strategic orientation focuses on developing bio-based products that outperform fossil-based counterparts like proteins and/or active ingredients for feed, food, pharma and cosmetics.

Create and accelerate the market-uptake of bio-based products and applications
The strategy is to increase public awareness and acceptance about these bio-based products but also to contribute to personnel education in bio-based industries.
